چکیده
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the trends of ciprofloxacin resistance pattern in commonly isolated gram-negative bacteria over time in a Saudi Arabian teaching hospital. METHODS A retrospective analysis was carried out for ciprofloxacin resistance patterns of 10089 isolates of gram-negative bacteria isolated from various clinical specimens submitted to microbiology laboratories at King Fahd Hospital of the University (KFHU), Alkhobar, Saudi Arabia during the period January 2002 to August 2005. RESULTS Increase in ciprofloxacin resistance rates in these isolates during the years 2002 and 2005 were as follows: Escherichia coli, 23.85 to 33.1%; Klebsiella pneumoniae, 15.93 to 27.55%; Enterobacter cloacae, 12.32 to 18.05%; Enterobacter aerogenes, 4.16 to 25.64%; Pseudomonas aeruginosa 17.05 to 39.53%, Pseudomonas spp., 20.58 to 58.77%; H. influenzae, 00.00% to 11.11% and H. aegyptius, 00.00% to 1.73%. CONCLUSION There was a gradual increase in resistance from year 2002 to 2005 in most of the gram negative isolates i.e. E. coli, K. pneumoniae, E. cloacae, E. aerogenes, P. aeruginosa and Pseudomonas spp showing that ciprofloxacin is no more a drug of choice for gram negative infections by these microbes.

In vitro ciprofloxacin resistance patterns of gram-positive bacteria isolated from clinical specimens in a teaching hospital in Saudi Arabia.
BACKGROUND Over the last few decades the ever-increasing level of bacterial resistance to antimicrobials has been a cause of worldwide concern. Fluoroquinolones, particularly ciprofloxacin has been used indiscriminately for both gram-positive and gram-negative bacterial infections. The increased use of ciprofloxacin has led to a progressive loss of bacterial susceptibility to this antibiotic. T...
متن کاملPrevalence of qnr Genes in Extended-Spectrum β-Lactamase Producing Klebsiella pneumoniae Isolated from Clinical Urine Specimens in University Teaching Hospitals, Iran
Background and Aims: Extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL) producing gram negative bacteria are resistant to penicillins, narrow and extended-spectrum cephalosporins, and aztreonam; also they are frequently resistant to trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, aminoglycosides, and quinolones. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of plasmid-mediated quinolone resistance (PMQR) determinants q...

Background & Aim: Antibiotic resistance among gram-negative bacilli is currently one of the major challenges for the health system in developing countries. The aim of this study was to determine the frequency and antibiotic resistance pattern of common ESBL-producing gram negative bacilli isolated from clinical specimens of hospitalized patients in Falsafi Hospital in Gorgan. Methods: In this ...
متن کاملHigh Burden of Antimicrobial Resistance among Bacteria Causing Pyogenic Wound Infections at a Tertiary Care Hospital in Kathmandu, Nepal
Pyogenic wound infections are one of the most common clinical entities caused and aggravated by the invasion of pathogenic organisms. Prompt and aggressive antimicrobial therapy is needed to reduce the burden and complications associated with these infections. In this study, we intended to investigate the common pathogens and their antimicrobial susceptibility patterns from the pyogenic wound i...
